Advanced Autonomy for Autonomous Vehicles
The project resulted in a Ground Power Box powered by a hydrogen PEM fuel cell, which extends the autonomy of drones (UAV) and ground vehicles (UGV) with clean energy, silent operation and zero emissions at the point of use.
Operation overview
Fado Energy developed a next-generation proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system designed for unmanned autonomous vehicles. The solution aims to significantly increase operational autonomy compared with conventional batteries, replacing polluting sources with clean energy and enabling silent, emission-free operation on extended missions and in demanding environments.
During implementation, embedding a fuel cell on board the drone proved unfeasible at this stage (size, hydrogen storage, weight and compatible drone). The solution evolved into a ground power unit fed by the fuel cell, which meets the core objective of extending vehicle autonomy – without relying on diesel generators and with no emissions on site. The project culminated in the construction and demonstration of a functional prototype (MVP) and in the creation of an associated line of products and services.
Objectives
- Build and validate a functional prototype (MVP) of a PEM fuel cell optimised for autonomous vehicles.
- Maximise autonomy and energy efficiency, with silent operation and zero emissions.
- Adopt a modular design, adaptable to different platforms (UAV, UGV and AUV).
- Prepare the commercialisation of the system and associated services: hydrogen supply, technical support and specialised training.
Results achieved
Fado Energy achieved the project’s main objective: creating its first proprietary technological product (MVP), setting itself apart from its consultancy activity. The hydrogen ground power unit was integrated and demonstrated in an operational environment, with a UAV (controlled flight) and a UGV B (outdoors), doubling autonomy compared with battery operation.

Product 1 – DELIVERED
Hydrogen Ground Power Box
Ground power unit powered by a PEM fuel cell, delivering clean energy to drones and ground vehicles and extending their autonomy. Functional prototype (MVP) validated at TRL 5.
Product 2 – IN PROGRESS
Hydrogen Supply
Supply secured, on an interim basis, from commercial industrial-gas suppliers. Dedicated green hydrogen supply is being prepared with national producers as the product moves closer to market.
Product 3 – DELIVERED
Technical Support & Maintenance
A maintenance plan for the power unit, integrated into the user manual, identifying the components to be serviced, their frequency and the procedures to follow in the event of a fault.
Product 4 – DELIVERED
Training in Hydrogen Technologies
Training in the use of fuel cells and the handling of hydrogen cylinders: fundamental concepts, applications and operation of the ground power unit.
